About Octopus Future

An independent not-for-profit at the heart of the Octopus ecosystem, working so that progress in technology serves everyone.

Who we are

Octopus Future Limited is an Australian public company limited by guarantee — a not-for-profit — registered with ASIC on 20 August 2026 (ACN 701 584 447, ABN 70 701 584 447) in New South Wales.

We exist exclusively for public benefit: to advance accessibility, inclusion and equitable participation for people with disability and others who experience barriers, including through the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, data and digital systems.

Why we exist

Technology is reshaping everyday life. That change can open doors or close them — and for people who already face barriers, the stakes are highest. We exist to make sure the future is built to include them, and to keep an independent, public-benefit voice at the table.

What we do

Our charitable purpose reaches people through five connected areas — community and accessibility, applied research, wellbeing, responsible AI, and inclusive innovation — all operated by Octopus Future Limited rather than as separate organisations.

How we are funded and governed

As a company limited by guarantee, Octopus Future has no shareholders and pays no dividends. Any surplus is applied solely to its charitable purpose. Members' liability is limited to a guarantee of AUD $10 each.

We are governed by a board of directors under our Constitution and a framework of board-approved policies covering related-party dealings, data governance and privacy, research integrity and responsible AI, grants and fundraising, and intellectual property and licensing.

Charity and tax status

Octopus Future operates on a not-for-profit basis and has submitted its application to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) for registration as a charity. That registration is in progress; Octopus Future is not yet an ACNC-registered charity.

Octopus Future does not currently hold Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) endorsement, so gifts to it are not tax-deductible at this time. We will update this page as our charity and tax status is confirmed.
